World Championships 2011

Britain’s leading medallist of all time at the Commonwealth Games Andrew Baggaley made his first appearance in the World Table Tennis Championships' individual events since the event was held in Paris in 2003 from 8th – 15th May 2011 in Rotterdam, Holland.

In the Qualification Group stages Andrew was drawn with three players, firstly recording a resounding 4-0 victory against Samat BEISENOV from Kazakhstan followed by dispatching of Rrahman ADAMAJ from Kosovo 4-0 who was later to be disqualified for playing with an illegal racquet.

In the all important Final Qualification Round Andrew was drawn against the dangerous South American player Albert MINO from Ecuador where he again raised his level to win by another impressive 4-0 score line and a well-deserved place in the 1st Round of the GAC Group World Table Tennis Championships.

In the 1st Round Andrew was drawn against the Spanish No.1 and World No.69 Carlos MACHADO who he has played and practised with on many occasions. In their last meeting Andrew recorded a close victory over the Spanish Champion but on the day Andrew went down fighting in 5 very close sets.

Andrew commented on the event when he returned to the UK..

I have to be content with my overall performance and very pleased with the style I made it through the Qualification matches without dropping a set in a very competitive environment. In the build up to the tournament a very close relative was not well and it was very difficult for me to fully focus on the preparations to this event. Therefore, I am proud I competed and on another day and time I’m sure I could have progressed through more rounds. Bearing in mind this is the first time I have played in the Individual events at a World Championships for 8 years I will only improve from the experience.”
