English National Championships 2011

Reigning English Men’s Singles National Champion Andrew Baggaley was attempting to win his 4th Men’s Singles National title at the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield from 4-6 March 2011.

Andrew, who won his first English Men’s Singles title as a teenager in 2002 and also won in both 2008 and 2010 was in determined form as he won his opening two matches against Shaun Marples (Derbyshire) and Lee Neil (Nottinghamshire) 4-0.

With England’s leading three players on the ITTF World Ranking list (March 2011) in one side of the draw it was fair to say Andrew was clearly in the most difficult half of the draw!

The playing schedule was also changed at the last moment due to Sky covering the event which meant Andrew having to play a Quarter-Final (normally played on Sunday morning) on Saturday night against Darius Knight (Surrey). Playing against a player with nothing to lose and in inspired form Andrew raised his level to record an excellent 4-2 victory and a place in the Semi-Final the following morning.

In the Semi-Final Andrew came up against Paul Drinkhall (Cleveland). Andrew taking the 1st set and the 5th set was not quite enough as Drinkhall went onto to take the match 4-2 and eventually win the title.

Andrew commented...

My ambition was always to win the English Men’s Singles title once therefore to win on three separate occasions is a dream! This time I was not able to peak for the event as I have been focussing on playing my best Table Tennis on ITTF Pro Tours and in the French National League with the aim of being in the form of my career at the London 2012 Olympics. I congratulate the new champion but I’ll be back!
